Full Category A Licence Guide: Everything You Need To Know
Are you ready to hit the open roads? If so, you’re likely wondering about the requirements for obtaining a full category A licence. In this guide we’ll walk you through the process, providing you with all the information you need to hit the road this summer!
What is a full category A Motorcycle Licence?
Obtaining a Full Category A Motorcycle Licence is a significant milestone for riders, as it requires passing both Module 1 and Module 2 assessments. Upon successful completion of these modules, you will be granted a full, unrestricted motorcycle licence, allowing you to ride any motorcycle with any engine capacity, without any restrictions.
Whilst it is possible to book both your Module 1 and Module 2 assessments on the same day, please note that if you fail the Module 1 test, you will be unable to sit the subsequent Module 2 test.
How to obtain a full motorcycle licence?
- If you’re 19 or older and have already completed your Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) licence, you’re ready to take the next step in your motorcycle training journey.To ride a motorcycle with a power output of 47 bhp, you’ll need to pass the practical motorcycle test. To help you prepare for this test, we recommend taking a training course to improve your riding skills and achieve test standard.
Motorcycle Training Wales offers training courses designed to build confidence and competence on the bike, preparing you for any situation on the road. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced rider, our courses will help you develop the skills and knowledge you need to pass your practical motorcycle test with ease.
The practical motorcycle test consists of two modules: Module 1, which is an off-road test, and Module 2, which is an on-road test.
Module 1, the off-road test, typically takes around 20 minutes and includes:
Wheeling the moped or motorcycle and using the stand
Riding a slalom and figure 8
A slow ride
A U-turn
Cornering and a controlled stop
Cornering and an emergency stop
Cornering and hazard avoidance
For the hazard avoidance and emergency stop exercises, you must ride at a minimum speed of:19 mph on a moped
31 mph on a motorcycle
Module 2, the on-road test, typically takes around 40 minutes to complete and includes:An eyesight check
‘Show me, tell me’ vehicle safety questions
Road riding
Independent riding
Remember to bring your Module 1 pass certificate to the Module 2 test.

- Have a valid CBT Certificate
- Have a valid Theory Certificate
- Be 19 years of age or over
- Passed your mod 1 test (if you’ve booked in for your mod 2 test)
