What is a CBT licence?
Before riding a moped or motorcycle on the road, it is mandatory to complete a compulsory basic training (CBT) course. This training ensures that you can ride safely on your own as you prepare for your full moped or motorcycle test.
How to get a CBT licence?
To obtain a CBT licence in the UK, you’ll need to follow these steps:
Apply for Provisional Licence: Before starting your CBT, apply for a provisional driving licence either online through the government website or by completing a D1 form available at post offices.
Complete CBT Course and Test: Enrol in a CBT course with an approved training body (ATB), such as Motorcycle Training Wales. The course typically spans a full day and covers these five elements:
Introduction and Eyesight Check: Discuss CBT goals, required clothing/equipment, and basic bike controls.
On-Site Riding: Practice manoeuvres like starting, stopping, gear changes, emergency stops, and turns.
Theory Lesson: Learn about the highway code, legal requirements, defensive riding, and hazard perception.
On-Road Phase: Ride on public roads for at least 2 hours under instructor supervision.
Assessment and Certificate DL196: The instructor assesses your on-site riding skills. If deemed safe, you proceed to the on-road session. Successful completion of all elements earns you a Certificate of Completion of Training (DL196), valid for 2 years.
These steps provide the foundation for further motorcycle training and testing, allowing you to progress towards a full motorcycle licence.
How long does it last?
In the UK, a CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) certificate is valid for two years from the date of issue. After two years, if you haven’t progressed to a full motorcycle licence, you’ll need to either retake the CBT course or obtain a full motorcycle licence to continue riding legally on public roads. Renewing your CBT certificate every two years is a common option for those who are not yet ready or eligible to take the full motorcycle test.
What can I ride?
After passing the CBT, you will be permitted to ride:
Unaccompanied on the public road
A motorcycle up to 125cc
A motorcycle with a power output not exceeding 11kw
With L-plates for a maximum of two years
An automatic scooter or manual motorcycle up to 125cc if you are over the age of 17.
Remember, you must complete the CBT course before hitting the road.
How to renew?
To renew your CBT certificate, you will need to still have a valid CBT certificate.
If your CBT certificate has expired, you will be required to book a regular CBT course to obtain your new certificate, which will last a further 2 years from the date of completion.
